Occupy Los Angeles and Long Beach will carry out a port action, "Occupy the Ports/A Day without Goldman Sachs," on December 12 as part of the Dec. 12 day of action, Boycott and March previously adopted by the GA. The occupation will take place at least one facility owned by SSA Marine, a shipping company belonging to Goldman Sachs, (coordinated with a possible port shut down by the port truck drivers) as a build up towards a General Strike on May 1, 2012.
Occupy LA launched this action based on a proposal from a working group that included rank and file ILWU participation as well as port truck drivers, who are prevented in the main from forming a union because they are fraudulently called "independent contractors" by the trucking and shipping companies to avoid paying social security, workers comp and other taxes, as well as forcing the drivers to eat the costs (waiting time, fuel, etc) and get piece rate for each container moved. Neither they, facing anti-trust prosecution if they organize an official collective organization, or the ILWU, which operates under the constraints of Taft Hartley, are in a position to call officially for a port action of this nature. The opposition by the ILWU international leadership is a CYA type statement that basically says "this is a third party action, not a labor action, for which we are not responsible nor involved." An arbitrator can rule that a community picket represents a safety hazard and allow the ILWU workers to stop work without penalty under their contract.
Our action has been built through patient community work including outreach to the workers, particularly the port truck drivers, mostly Mexicano and Central American, who have shut down the ports twice before through industrial actions related to migrant rights (as is Dec. 12, a "day without a migrant" Boycott and March for full legalization and jobs for all, which was also and independently endorsed by the GA prior to the adoption of the port action. We never called it a "port shutdown" -- that came from Occupy Oakland later -- but Occupy the Ports! A Day without Goldman Sachs! We were very clear from day 1 and ever since that only the workers in the ports, including the truck drivers as well as the ILWU, have the capacity to shut down the ports of LA and Long Beach by withholding their labor. We are focused on one or more facilities of SSA Marine, a Goldman Sachs owned company that is a war contractor, environmental criminal, violator of workers' rights and greedy profiteer of globalization/deindustrialization/super-exploitation of workers in other countries.
We have talked with and distributed flyers to port truck drivers at truck stops and truck yards throughout the harbor area and as far afield as the inland empire and Phoenix AZ. We have walked the picket line with the ILWU clerks who went out on strike last week until they were ordered back to work by the arbitrator on a technicality. We went out to the monthly meeting of ILWU Local 13 in San Pedro and distributed flyers and talked with many rank and file members who appreciated what we are doing. We went to a demonstration in Century City called by the Teamsters after a number of the drivers they were trying to organize were fired by a shipping company. We had people at a big Teamster rally in Wilmington, where James Hoffa spoke out strongly in support of the Occupy movement and specifically urged his organizers to work with Ernesto Nevarez of Port of Aztlan, who has been working with the port truck drivers to build for industrial action on Dec. 12. We have worked closely with the labor committee of Occupy LA, which includes folks from SEIU, UTLA, CFA, Roofers and other unions, as well as the County Fed. We have spoken with folks from Occupy Long Beach, Occupy Santa Ana, Occupy Riverside and Occupy Pasadena, all of whom have embraced and helped build this action, with young people doing community organizing in Wilmington, with Occupy San Pedro and with tenants at a Goldman Sachs owned property in Harbor City who are organizing against an unjust eviction. We have reached out to students at the high school and college level, faith-based groups, rank and file and organized labor. We have reported on all this community organizing at numerous General Assemblies both before and after the eviction.
This action represents a direction that will pull Occupy LA forward by sinking community roots and building alliances with significant social forces including labor and the migrant communities. I hope to see you and your colleagues on Monday, and I hope you will spread the word through whatever networks you are part of to help make the action a success. By demonstrating the social weight that the Occupy movement can bring to bear, we will increase the freedom of movement and militancy of the official labor movement, and inspire and help organize the far larger number of unorganized and unrepresented workers.

Join WeAreChangeLA for an Outreach and Bannering in Santa Monica. If you are in Southern California this September 11th and not in New York, 9/11 Truth is happening in beautiful Santa Monica! Come hang with WeAreChangeLA at the Cannon and WeAreChange Hollywood on Third Street just blocks away.
We will convene at the Cannon in Santa Monica at 1:00pm where Colorado Ave. meets Ocean Ave. on the bluff at the top of the Santa Monica Pier. It's the closest cannon to the pier. There we will have a 9/11 Truth information table, free DVDs to give away, hand held signs and our big blue banners.
Up and comer, WeAreChange Hollywood will have a 9/11 Truth information table at the Third Street Promenade South of Arizona Ave. directly between the Criterion and AMC theaters.

WeAreChange Hollywood (WACHO) is an outstanding So Cal Change chapter that hit the ground running last October. They have done amazing work in a short time and we are very excited to get to work with them at their first Anniversary event!!!
WACLA and WACHO will be providing well over 1,000 DVDs for this double event. We will be bringing handheld signs so that when Truthers walk from one action to another the visibility will grow. Anyone coming near this area on 9/11/11 will be inundated by 9/11 Truth. LETS TURN OUT IN NUMBERS!! PLEASE COME OUT FROM NEIGHBORING COUNTIES!! WE WILL MAKE YOUR TRUTHER HEART HAPPY YOU DID!! Bring your DVDs, your flyers, your signs and yourselves. Also bring some sunscreen, a hat and a snack. Bring a chair if you want to sit for a bit. We'll be doing outreach in the park from 1:00pm to whenever we poop out. Then we all can grab some dinner together.

Come one, come all! We always have a great time putting stickers on DVDs, stamping the sleeves with our meetup info, and stuffing the DVDs into the sleeves.
We need to prepare for this year's 9-11 outreach in Santa Monica. Katy has been slaving away at the DVD duplicating with 100s and 100s of DVDs that were recently donated. Thank you! Let's be there on Wednesday the 7th to do our part to prepare the DVDs for the outreach.
Plus this is an opportunity for truth advocates to hang out and be together, which is always a good thing. Mel's is a '50s diner with fun food and drink.
